Mozilla Plugin Support on MacOS X

Last updated February 4, 2007
This document refers to Firefox 2.0, Camino 1.0, and SeaMonkey 1.1.

Adobe Reader

Version: 8.0
Firefox 2.0: Unsupported
Camino 1.0: Unsupported
SeaMonkey 1.1: Unsupported
Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0 ships with a browser plugin, but it does not work with Gecko based browsers.

The plugin is installed in the Internet Plug-ins folder in the Library Folder automatically. The best course of action at this stage is to delete it, and tell Adobe Reader not to check for it using the Adobe Reader Preferences.

If you need a plugin for viewing PDFs, you will need to use the PDF Browser Plugin, which is free for non-commercial use.

Adobe SVG Viewer

Version: 3.0
Firefox 2.0: Untested
Camino 1.0: Untested
SeaMonkey 1.1: Untested
This plugin is automatically installed in the Internet Plug-ins folder in the Library Folder. It has not been tested with Firefox 1.5, Camino 1.0 or SeaMonkey 1.1, however it is unlikely to work.

Flip4Mac WMV Plugin

Version: 2.1 or later
Firefox 2.0: Manual
Camino 1.0: Manual
SeaMonkey 1.1: Manual
Since the Windows Media Player plugin has been deprecated, the Flip4Mac WMV plugin is now the officially supported plugin of choice for viewing WMV content on the web.

Camino Only: Camino 1.0 and later has issues displaying the plugin content within its window correctly. This is a known issue.

Java Embedding Plugin

Version: 0.9.5 and later
Firefox 2.0: Automatic
Camino 1.0: Automatic
SeaMonkey 1.1: Automatic
The Java Runtime Environment that ships with OS X has major issues as a plugin for Gecko-based browsers. As such, mozilla.org has opted to include the Java Embedding Plugin by default in all of its projects.

Firefox 1.5.0.1 and later, SeaMonkey 1.0 and later, and Camino 1.0 and later ship with the JEP version 0.9.5 or later. The JEP is updated in maintenance releases of all three browsers. If you wish to upgrade to a newer version of JEP, place it in the Internet Plugins folder in the Library folder of your home directory.

Macromedia Flash Player

Version: 8.0r22 and later
Firefox 2.0: Automatic
Camino 1.0: Automatic
SeaMonkey 1.1: Automatic
This plugin is automatically installed in the Internet Plug-ins folder in the Library Folder. You can update to the latest version (9.0.28.0) by installing it from Macromedia's website.

Macromedia Shockwave Player

Version: 10.1
Firefox 2.0: Automatic
Camino 1.0: Automatic
SeaMonkey 1.1: Automatic
This plugin is automatically installed in the Internet Plug-ins folder in the Library Folder.

Camino Only: Shockwave Director content displays at the wrong location in the window if hardware rendering is enabled.

PDF Browser Plugin

Version: 2.2.3
Firefox 2.0: Manual
Camino 1.0: Manual
SeaMonkey 1.1: Manual
  1. Mount the PDF Browser Plugin disk image
  2. Copy the PDF Browser Plugin to your Internet Plug-ins folder
Important! This plugin is only free for private use at home for not-for-profit activities and for use at educational institutions for not-for-profit activities. The plugin asks you to choose type of use the first time it is used.

Note: This plugin works on PowerPC-based Macs only.

QuickTime

Version: 7.1 or later
Firefox 2.0: Automatic
Camino 1.0: Automatic
SeaMonkey 1.1: Automatic
To install the latest release of QuickTime, run Software Update. This plugin is automatically installed in the Internet Plug-ins folder in the Library Folder.
Download: QuickTime 7.1

RealOne Player

Version: 10.0
Firefox 2.0: Automatic
Camino 1.0: Automatic
SeaMonkey 1.1: Automatic
Copy RealPlayer to your preferred location. The plugin is automatically installed in the Internet Plug-ins folder in the Library Folder after launching for the first time.
Download: RealOne Player

Windows Media Player

Version: 9.0
Firefox 2.0: Unsupported
Camino 1.0: Unsupported
SeaMonkey 1.1: Unsupported
This plugin is automatically installed in the Internet Plug-ins folder in the Library Folder using the installer from Microsoft's website. However, it has known (and in some cases severe) problems when used with Mozilla based browsers. The Flip4Mac WMV Plugin should be used instead.

Important! mozilla.org has made the decision that Windows Media Player will no longer be supported on Mac OS X. This is due to major issues in stability and compatibility. It is also due to Microsoft endorsing the Flip4Mac WMV Plugin.
